You walk into a bar… roll initiative. July 25th, 2005

I’ve scanned and uploaded a number of my favorite sketches from my years of playing and DMing D&D. I have had the BEST players that anyone could have wished for and they have added so much my to campaign setting and to my fulfillment of the game over the adventures we’ve shared.

First, I’d like to remind everyone if this little blast from the past.

Here’s someone that I know Andy misses.

Here’s an item that the PC’s COULD have taken had they not been so damn moral and respectful!

Here’s a weapon that everyone fears and respects.

Don’t make him mad. He’s had a rough life. WWJD?

Here’s sort of what i want the NewGen site to look like, eventually.

And finally, two teasers from the Campaign Setting Sketches: A city and a man (with details of his nations political system).

If anyone has any requests or comments about what you’d like to see here, please let me know!

Just a few Links July 25th, 2005

Here is an informative Flash cartoon on what a real D&D session is like. Raw and Uncut… it just might make you lose yer mind.

And here is a little something for our gentile friends. So EASY AND CONVENIENT!

Here is a list of the games I’m currently playing:

Battlefield 2!, City of Heroes! and the ubiquitous World of WarCraft!

…and finally (for now), if you thought YOUR mother was bad… listen to THIS poor 16 year-old dude’s mom. It’s pretty large, give it time to load.

Welcome to… Meat Space. July 21st, 2005

I have recently become rather apathetic when it comes to my MMORPGs. World of Warcraft, “one of the best video games I have ever played” as it is, has simply grown old for me. I love the game, its the people in it that i cannot stand. My apathy towards playing it owes no small smount in the fact that friends have all gone their seperate ways in and out of game. Level disparities, differing servers for different play styles and personal lives IRL (“In Real Life” for those not in the know) have all taken thier toll on the social aspect of the game. And, as everyone knows, the social aspect is the MAJOR aspect that draws you into such a game.

The “blues”, the Community Moderators on the Official Forums, have recently said that the community will finally get one of their most vocalized wishes: A PvP/RP Server. A PvP server is for the l33t gamers that get their jollies from slaying other players. RP servers are for the D&D playing, LoTR quoting players in search of a real escape into a fantasy world (for a bit, anyways).

Many people have reasoned (I among them) that one cannot have a TRUE Role-Playing experience without the ability to attack when, where and whom you wish. On RP and PvE (Normal) Servers, you cannot attack a member of the opposite faction (Horde Vs. Alliance) unless you make yourself available to be attacked. This makes it impossible to actually carry out threats and make war whilst Role-Playing.

Being on a PvP server is nothing short of pure, white-hot frustration for me. I’m minding my own business! I’m MINING for Chrissakes! Why are you attacking me without provocation?! Oh.. and you’re 20 levels higher than me… i stand NO chance at all. great.

Being on an RP server is almost boring… its like reading a phone book: a great cast of characters, but NO action, suspense or danger!

Frankly, i can understand why it has taken Blizzard so long to implement this specific sort of server. Enforcing all of the extra rules in a PvP world is hard enough… now they must police all of the RP elements, as well. Whew. Even as a DM in a D&D campaign with a few of your close friends, that can be an damn handful. I cannot imagine having to attempt it with several thousand people all at once.

Hopefully, when the RP/PvP server comes on-line, the game will again hold some appeal to me. I might, just might, have it all…

At least its not THIS bad…

And, Goddammit… it is NOT a crime to be young…ergh.

Speaking of games vs. religion… July 17th, 2005

I have always suspected that the reason why religious people dislike games (D&D in particular) is that is, in many ways, it is the antithesis of religion.

Allow me to explain, thusly: When gamers talk about coming back from the dead (respawning), talking donkeys, sticks turning into snakes, transmuting water, people being able to fly, seas being parted, deities sending down an avatar, magical spears, virgin births, flaming wheels in the sky, being able to cure wounds with a touch, walking on water, casting magic spells, and praying so that your Deity will smite your enemies, we know that its not real. Magic is something to put Skill Points into.. not a way of life.

The vast majority of gamers get up from the gaming table and leave thier dice behind. They get up from the couch and leave the XBox controller behind. Gamers don’t ACTUALLY believe that Elves, Angels or Demons exist… and religious people DO. They actually think that all that stuff is literally TRUE. And, to me, that’s what’s so damn scary about people like that. D&D makes the distinction between fantasy and reality. we know thats it’s merely a game. Theists go to church, hear this stuff, and LEAVE the church with the notion that all that shit they just heard is REAL. THEY are the ones that cannot differentiate between fantasy and reality.

My boss is an Italian Plumber. July 14th, 2005

Why don’t religion and video games mix?

An interesting article… But, of course, i have to put in my two cents on it.

I think that the main reason games (video games and games in general) and religion don’t mix is because they tend to be trying to accomplish opposite goals. Games are played for fun, relaxation and enjoyment. Religion is tedious (all those ceramonies and prayers), Stressful (Hey, you could spend ALL of eternity burning in HELL if you do the slightest thing wrong!) and generally forces you to do things that are decidedly UNfun (like spending all your time trying to convince other people that YOUR Invisible Man in the Sky is better than THEIR Invisible Man in the Sky… sometimes by strapping C4 to yourself and blowing up in an orphanage or someshit).

I mean, really.. what’s fun about religion? not much…
What’s fun about being a Space Marine and blowing the heads off of zombies with a shotgun? EVERYTHING!

… and for the love of Sagan, get a fucking haircut and stop teasing your sister.

A Race everyone wins! July 12th, 2005

I have added a few more placeholders in the Races Section of the NewGen site. They’re still a long way from the finished product but, at least they’re all in the same template now. There should be enough info on the Races pages to whet your appetite a bit and tide you over for a while.

Yet, I still love olives… July 12th, 2005

I never thought I would have a reason to hate Greece (of all places), but check THIS shit out:

A new law passed in Greece means that anybody carrying an electronic game – even if it is just on a mobile phone – could face a hefty fine or lengthy jail sentence

Thousands of British tourists in Greece are unknowingly facing heavy fines or long terms in prison for owning mobile phones or portable video games. The Greek government has banned all electronic games across Greece, including those in home computers, Game Boy-style portable consoles, and on mobile phones.

Law Number 3037, enacted at the end of July, explicitly forbids electronic games with ‘electronic mechanisms and software’ from public and private places, and people have already been fined tens of thousands of euros for playing or owning games.

The blanket ban was decided in February after the government admitted it was incapable of distinguishing innocuous video games from illegal gambling machines.” One online report said that even watching a film on DVD — many of which contain promotional games linked to the movie — had resulted in an arrest and a 10,000-euro fine.

SO, because YOU (the government of Greece) cannot take the time to distinguish the difference between a video game and a gambling machine, you just make ALL electonic games illegal?! That is a whole new level of assholishness.. a new level only attainable by mixing ignorance, greed (the fines!) and laziness in the perfect amounts for a sickening whole that is greater than its parts. Hats off to you, Greece, for completely pissing me off.

“Welcome to Greece! -Amish welcome! Everyone else, get the fuck out!”

The Common Cold July 9th, 2005

Dear users of the inter-web… nets,

It has recently come to my attention that there are assholes out there who write programs with the express intent of pissing me off. The programs are called trojans, keyloggers, adware, or, more succinctly, “spyware”. My one wish is that these programs, and the aforementioned assholes that write them, would be forever cast into the lowest levels of the Nine Hells. In an effort to expedite my wishes, I am listing the best anti-spyware programs I know. Please use them, citizens of the internet.

Sincerely,
Scott “Moloth” Kelley

1. Ad-Aware
2. SpyBot SD
3. Microsoft’s Anti-Spyware
4. Spyware Blaster
5. Trend Micro’s AntiSpyware
6. Common Sense*

Yes, with just these 6 tools, you too can annihilate irritating and destructive spyware from your little compy.

* … for Sagan’s sake, don’t open any funny e-mails, download from sites that you don’t trust and don’t click on any pop0ups or banner ads.

Do I hope or do I fear? July 7th, 2005

I’ve made a compilation of portraits of the Liberators. Well, their signature characters anyway.. I don’t think anyone wants to see the actual portraits of a bunch of gamer-geeks. You can download the 9.21 Meg .zip file HERE.
The portraits were drawn by Daystrom and the miscellaneous pics were drawn by yours truly.

As anyone who ever clicked this link knows, I need some serious graphical help with the NewGen site. HERE is mock-up of what I like the site to look like. …And here is a link to my Website proposal and Structure Page.

Whew. I have a lot of work to do yet.

I gave myself Header July 6th, 2005

I’m playing around with Adobe Photoshop (that I acquired and paid for in a very legal and totally not underhanded way) and fiddling with the site’s graphics a bit. If any of the three people that actually see this site have any suggestions (or help) just lemme know. I’d like to become at least proficient with Photoshop so that i can eventually create my own graphics for the NewGen site. …that, or become really good friends with a computer graphic artist. …thats female. … and Asian. … that’s a littly Gothy. …and has no gag reflex. *cough*

Seriously, if anyone knows how to tweak WordPress, I’d be much abliged for the help. I’d really like the Links column to be on the LEFT side of the main text column. Speaking of the Main Column, it could be a little wider, as well.

XFire, Scanner, Bookshelf. Oh My, I’m George Takei July 2nd, 2005

At the behest of people who use such software, i’ve downloaded XFire, the “Gamers Chat” program. Despite my abhorrance of just “chatting” online, I may actually find myself using it. First, it lets me know what games my Friends are playing at the moment, which map or scenario they’re on, how many players and even what the ping AND the IP is of that particular server. In addition to all that actually useful info, it comes with the ability to Quick-Launch from the chat program into that game. I hear tell that you are able to chat with your buddies with Xfire while IN the game of your choice. Ignoring the underhanded potential of such a feature when used in competative multiplayer games, its a pretty neat idea. I have yet to really try it out, but I guess we’ll see how much i actually use it. Oh, just look me up if I’m on-line… you KNOW the name.

In an effort to get NewGen off the several foot high stack of papers and notes in my center of my room onto the Official NewGen Website I have purchased a new scanner. Not too pricey and more than I’ll need for a while. Hell, the old Visioneer that i was borrowing (Thanks Cin!) could scan with a high enough rez that I could see the fibrous texture of the paper I had drawn on. yeah. i don’t need to be able to see the constituant parts of the object I’m scanning, thanks.

Oh.. and I bought the Dungeon Master Guide II, as well. When i get done digesting it, i’ll post my review. ’cause you know… you care and stuff.

…and I bought a new book shelf for my bedroom. It’s 72″ tall, has 5 shelves (4 of which are adjustable), and has a dark cherrywood finish. I… i uh plan on putting books on it. No, really.

Check THIS out
