Scientology

I personally want to thank Tom Cruise for bringing this so-called religion back into the media again.

After doing a little research and reading on the internet, I have come to the conclusion these people are goofballs.  What person with a shred of sense would believe L. Ron Hubbard's belief that Xenu came from another galaxy, destroyed everyone on earth, placed their souls in a volcano and then those souls are in every one of us?

You must reach the level of "Clear" in Scientology to remove these so-called nasty souls.  Then you can obtain the level of OT (Scott, help me out, I forgot what the OT means....something Thetan).

I just really can't fathom how people can be brainwashed with such bullshit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology
Is a good source of info.

OT is short for Operating Thetans.
Yup, the Scientologists believe in all the alien souls, Xenu, Master of the Universe, and, apparently, a form of reincarnation.

Re: Scientology

Come on. Why shouldn't you be able to trust a religion founded by a science fiction writer?

These are L. Ron Hubbard quotes:

<em>"Make money. Make more money. Make other people make money."</em>

<em>"The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them."</em>

<em>"The way to make a million dollars is to start a religion."</em>

Re: Scientology

Yep, he claimed it is a religion for tax purposes.  I\'m not sure how they justify that, but oh well.

Still, it boggles my mind how intelligent people (assuming some of these people have some level of intelligence before getting involved) can allow their mind to believe all that.

Re: Scientology

Sometimes, <em>wanting </em>something to be true can be stronger than <em>knowing </em>that its not.  Its a basic human weakness, i'm afraid.

People want to feel special. They want to feel importnant and loved and accepted. Religion not only fills the normal person-to-person role for that, its also makes you special and loved by deity.  It makes you more important than almost everything else in the universe.  i.e., the earth was created for you, humans were created to rule, only humans have souls, etc...

Re: Scientology

In the shocker of all shockers, Tom Cruise isn't the linguistic expert he claims to be. Despite telling everybody Suri means "princess" in Hebrew, Hebrew linguists have confirmed that it doesn't.

Suri has only two meanings - one is a person from Syria and the other "go away" when addressed to a female. Hebrew expert Jonathan Went says, "I think it's fair to say they have made a mistake here. There are variations of the way the Hebrew name for princess is spelt but I have never seen it this way." Suri can also be translated into a Hindi boy's name, and it also means "pointy nose" in some Indian dialects and "pickpocket" in Japanese

Re: Scientology

I read about that.  I'm sure a lot of people wish Tom would "go away" after all his crazy antics.

As for what you said, Scott, I understand what you are saying but it still doesn't help me understand what I've been saying all along.  Feeling important takes over rational intelligence?

Re: Scientology

Does Scientology seem any crazier than Christianity or any other religion? It only sounds bizarre because it hasn't been beaten into peoples' heads for 2000 years. I don't think Scientoligists seem any more like goofballs than Christians.

I mean, a whole religion based on a man who was put up on a cross...then buried in a tomb, which he arose from and now lives in the sky? And this was done for our "sins"? And if we don't worship him we're doomed to an eternity of burning and torture?

Re: Scientology

I guess the only real distinction is that, with Christainity, you DO have 2000 years of history and countless generations indocrination into it from birth.  They've had 2,000 years to refine and evolve the religion into something palatable for the masses.

Scientology was created in THIS generaton. It is EASILY disproven.  It was written by a racist Sci-fi author!  It is clearly a completely fabricated 'religion'.
