Re: D&D 4th Edition!

That is a horrible horrible presentation. Lots of info, but awkwardly presented. And that promo was gut wrenchingly bad. Still, some of the ideas seem to make sense.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

online-tools = no. this is fucking D&D. you sit around a table with your friends and roll dice. there are dozens of games (some quite good) that you can play online.

simplifying the classes = no. breaking down the classes to "DPS", "TANK", "Crowd Control", "Healer" is just plain insulting. Yes, World of Warcraft does that, but thats so even the most simple-minded douche can play (and pay for) it. Some us require some fucking depth to our ROLE-PLAYING and story-telling!

stream-lining rules = Maybe. Yeah, Grapple, Bull Rush and several other rules HAVE stopped my adventures for a few minutes of page-turning frenzy. But, too much over-simplification weakens the versatility and the verisimilitude.

they need to fucking understand that D&D is not a miniature wargame. I'd play Warhammer if all i wanted my character to be is a 2 inch tall representation of a list of stats.

I was ECSTATIC about 3.0... i WAS. it was genius! simple, powerful, versatile... everything a RPG should be. Now, they're gonna gimp the damn game with "on-line resources" and "virtual boards".

I swear, if they change the basic d20 mechanic, i'm gonna drive to Washington state and Delayed Blast Fireball some fuckers. They'll have to rename themselves Wizard of the Toast.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

Well, some online tools could be quite useful I think. A laptop full of indexed, keyword searchable rules sounds pretty damn handy i think. Digital character creation could be useful for quickly printing out character sheets with all the little +'s an -'s listed already. It would be cool to implement a create a char. where you choose all the little details like eye shape and placement, hair color and style, etc, etc. then let you clothe them from a large number of choices and then print out a picture of your char. Not everyone knows how to draw, and that would be a fun way of showing other players what your char looks like.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

i LIKE the concept of a digital character creator... but, dammit, it had better be robust.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

It is possible to be robust, just look at what the WWE games were doing back in 2001 to see just how robust character creators were 6 years ago.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

I give them a hand on the online connectivity tools. I remember an awkward time of about 2 years when the only D&D i could get was from yahoo groups, and all it was was text-based conference chat windows with small 'net-presentation-type graphs and grids and built-in dice rollers.

Yeah, D&D was made for tabletop, but not everybody is lucky enough to have local friends who are geeky enough to run campaigns with. Just think, now you could run a weekly campaign with Russ, Cin, and Sandy without them needing to burn gas to stare at your ugly mug for 4 hours tongue I'm still leery about the whole 'Simplifying your class's roll' thing, but we'll just have to see where it goes.

Will this be a natural progression from 3.5e or some hellish real-world application of DDO...
We'll know next year *shrug*

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

Yeah, the 'Simplifying your class's roll' thing reminds me so much of City of Heroes. they just cut right to the chase and CALLED the classes what they were... Tankers, Blasters, Controllers, Defenders, Scrappers.. all very simply descriptive of what your role is in a group.

To think that they'd do that with the wonderfully nuanced, subtle and vastly customizable properties of a D&D character class really, deeply bothers me. It sounds so confining and frustrating.
"I want to be a fast, nimble Fighter!"
"nope, sorry, you're the Tank.... you HAVE to wear heavy armor and carry a big shield. You shoulda rolled a Rogue."

ugh.

Hey, WotC, instead of YOU determining what our Classes role is the party, how about you let US, the PLAYERS, figure that out? *shakes fist*

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

If they did it like CoH i'd be ok with it. Each archetype had a roll that they would be best at but good talent picks and power sets could bridge gaps. I've seen

an ice blaster lock down a boss
a regen scrapper tank an AV
a fire tank kill about 120 ninjas at once (no, seriously)
a radiation defender AoE farming 40 mobs at once
and a gravity controller 3-shot a mob that was a level higher than him.

If they say 'your class's roll is THIS' but they still leave in the abilities for you to go outside your roll, I'm ok with it. They did say that non-magical classes will be having about as many in-combat options as classes like mage and cleric

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

yeah, i've heard that, as just naked classes by themselves, that a 20th level Fighter stands no chance against a 2oth level Wizard. the Wizard has a million different options at his disposal, but the Fighter is pretty much like he is at 1st level... he attacks things and does physical damage with a weapon, he just does it with bigger numbers at 20th.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

*lmao* omg the bad cliche'd classes... please tell me that those aren't the new class roles!

Barbarian - Swing penis
Bard - sing and be useless
Cleric - kill anybody that doesn't worship your god (they've gone republican!)
Druid - suck. still.
Fighter - apply excessive force. if that doesn't work, use more
Monk - will be removed in 4thE to preserve balance o.O
Paladin - Dumb clerics with bigger swords
Ranger - will be removed in 4thE due to too many Legolas clones. infringement FTL
Rogue - SNEAK ATTACK (rogue's skill points have all been removed in 4thE)
Sorcerer - See Mage
Wizard - See Mage

new class! MAGE
- we decided having the two different spellcasters was too confusing, so we clumped them both together into the new 'Mage' class. Mages learn new spells like wizards did, but cast them spontaneously as Sorcerors did. The new 'ideal' adventuring group will be comprised of 2 clerics and 3 mages. Anybody that rolls anything else sucks and doesn't know how to play.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

Paladin: Devout warriors and champions of their deities, paladins are divinely inspired knights who fight at the front of a battle. If you want to challenge foes to single combat, fight for a cause, and smite your foes with divine might, then paladin is the class for you.

*cringe*

Edit #1:
Gone is the complete spectrum of alignments.  Now there's only..

✦ Good: Freedom and kindness.
✦ Lawful Good: Civilization and order.
✦ Evil: Tyranny and hatred.
✦ Chaotic Evil: Entropy and destruction.
✦ Unaligned: Having no alignment; not taking a stand.

Edit #2: No more fun and interesting combat!  It looks like you're almost guaranteed to hit.  Even with monster AC going up across the board.

To make an attack, roll 1d20 and add the following:
✦ One-half your level
✦ The relevant ability score modifier
✦ All other modifiers (see page 279)
The total is your attack result.

Edit #3:  WHAT THE FUCK.

None of the races have any disadvantages.  Dragonborn get +2 Strength and +2 Charisma...  Humans get +2 on any one ability score..  Elves get +2 dex and +2 wisdom, half-elves get +2 con, +2 cha, Dwarves get +2 con and +2 wisdom..

Edit #4: At Will powers.

Every class has Powers that they can use at will, per encounter, daily, or under other circumstances.  You can 'retrain' and pick different ones as you progress.  Here's some examples!

Cleric: Healing Word
You whisper a brief prayer as divine light washes over your target, helping to mend its wounds.

Encounter (Special) ✦ Divine, Healing

Special: You can use this power twice per encounter, but only once per round. At 16th level, you can use this power three times per encounter.

Minor Action  Close burst 5
    (10 at 11th level, 15 at 21st level)

Target: You or one ally

Effect: The target can spend a healing surge and regain an additional 1d6 hit points.
Increase the amount of additional hit points regained to 2d6 at 6th level, 3d6 at 11th level, 4d6 at 6th level, 5d6 at 21st level, and 6d6 at 26th level.

Note: This is in addition to Encounter-prayers, At-Will prayers, and the cleric's normal prayer (spell) list.

Edit #5:  B33J should appreciate this.  Cleave is an at-will power...which they're dubbing Exploits, for the Fighter class.

Re: D&D 4th Edition!

New post for new shit-tacular stuff.

Paragon Path:  Pick one.  at 11th level, you get bonuses in addition to leveling up in that class. Yay.

Later on, you can pick an Epic Destiny.  These are Prestige Classes..but renamed...and you still level up normally.

Edit #1: They streamlined skills into an afterthought!

Here is the *complete* list of skills, as they appear in the PHB.

Acrobatics, Arcana, Athletics, Bluff, Diplomacy, Dungeoneering, Endurance, Heal, History, Insight, Intimidate, Nature, Perception, Religion, Stealth, Streetwise, Thievery

When you make your character, you pick a number of skills..and you get +5 at that skill.

Also: when you roll your check, you add Half your level (much like attack rolls.  So now..who needs to be bothered with excelling at something?  Just level up, you can be just a good at stealth as a rogue!)

Edit #2:  Magic items have a "recommended level"  for each one, so n00b GMs can assign proper gear.  *nod*

Edit #3:  Random combat option:  You can assist an ally in attacking.  You make a basic melee attack vs. AC 10, if you succeed..do no damage, but add +2 to an allies attack roll against that enemy, or give them +2 to their defense from that enemy.

Edit #4: This makes me sad.

No monk class.  In fact, here's the new class list.
Class :: Paragon Path(s)
Cleric :: Angelic avenger, Divine oracle, Radiant servant, Warpriest
Fighter :: Iron vanguard, Kensei, Pit fighter, Swordmaster
Paladin :: Astral Weapon, Champion of the order, Hospitaler, Justiciar
Ranger :: Battlefield archer, Beast stalker, Pathfinder, Stormwarden
Rogue :: Cat burglar, Daggermaster, Master infiltrator, Shadow assassin
Warlock :: Doomsayer, Feytouched, Life-stealer
Warlord :: Battle captain, Combat veteran, Knight commander, Sword marshal
Wizard :: Battle mage, Blood mage, Spellstorm mage, Wizard of the Spiral Tower
