Throwback

Now available, Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback. I picked up a case of each tonight at Wal-Mart. They're sweetened with cane sugar, rather than high fructose corn syrup. I've been drinking Jones Sodas for the same reason. Throwback comes packaged in delightfully retro cans and cases, with a minimalist style and old school logos. Quite nice when contrasted with all the "extreme" portrayal of modern Dew.

So far, I've only tried the Mountain Dew. The flavor is similar, but a little different. It's sweet, but not overly sweet like regular Mountain Dew. Overall, it has a smoother taste. It kind of reminds me of a diet drink, but in a good way.

At first I wasn't sure if it was better, but after getting about halfway down the can I'm more accustomed to it, and I think I might end up preferring it. Going back to old Mountain Dew might just be worse now. I'll try the Pepsi tomorrow.

Kind of interesting that PepsiCo would try this. It's almost like they are acknowledging that HFCS isn't better, like they've led us to believe.

I suspect it's available for a limited time, but I do hope it's successful enough for them to maybe bring more mainstream sodas back with sugar again. Oh, and the cases were only $3.50 each at Wal-Mart. I was expecting them to be a lot more.

Re: Throwback

I've tried it, and its not bad, but its missing the bite in regular Mountain Dew. I like the sharpness of regular dew, so this smoothness is off putting.

Re: Throwback

I have been looking forward to this, but it isn't in my area yet.  Such a shame.

Re: Throwback

Finally found some of these and tired both.  I agree with Collin and the Dew missing it's bite.  I also found both to be much less sweet than expected.  They have less carbonation as well.

The exact opposite is true for the "real sugar" versions of coke and sprite that came out a month or so ago.  The coke and sprite had TONS of carbonation and seemed much sweeter.  Odd.

Re: Throwback

I noticed this over the weekend in Boston, it was everywhere.  Dew, Pepsi, and my brother said he found Dr. Pepper throwback, so I am on the hunt for that now.

Re: Throwback

So it's not just labeling they are using the old tastes as well?

Re: Throwback

They're making it more or less according to the original formulas, using cane sugar and orange juice concentrate.
