4th Edition

DnD

Dear the people,

The day the DnD 4th ed quick rules were made available to the public, I suffered an internet outage. Several days and a new router later I am back online and let me tell you, having it and not being able to talk about it was a very special kind of hell. I have no played it yet. We are saving the module until memorial day, wherein after a cookout, we will play Dungeons and Dragons, fat, gassy and lethargic, the way God intended.

My impressions so far? I have two.

1. It's interesting to see what happens when someone who defines something dies, and to see how it changes without their watchful eye and guiding hand. Now Gygax hadn't had anything to do with DnD for years. A decade and a half, I think. Also, work on this edition started in 2005, but even so, it's hard not to feel a connection with Gygax's passing and this edition of DnD. 4th edition has taken out any resemblance it had to 1st or 2nd edition. This simply is not your father's DnD.

2. This is an amazing game. The daily, per encounter, and at will abilities are really really great. And they make Wizards useful. Wizards do not run out of spells. They can magic missile at will. Take all that in.
The game is also very miniatures heavy. You're going to have to either take up the miniatures painting hobby, start buying the DnD miniatures like they want you to do, or do what I did and buy all the remaindered Mage Knight figures, you can get them for a song online, and re-base them onto Warhammer bases.
The classes they show us are all really defined. Rogues and warlords move people around. Clerics heal you when they hit things. Fighters fight. Wizards don't run out of spells. Paladins are martyrs, throwing themselves into the way of damage and sacrificing their own healing surges to heal you.
Death is handled differently and it's a little too nuanced to get into here, but suffice it to say it's very difficult to actually die.
There's a class of monster now called "Minions" who only have 1hp and do a set amount of damage rather than rolling.

And the list goes on. These are positive changes. They keep the game moving and fun. I really have nothing but good things to say about 4th Edition so far.

I'm sure I'll have more to say in the coming days and especially after we play, so keep one eye on this site. Also, I fully intend to be at the midnight release at Sci-Fi City, anyone else gonna go?

is it just me, or are all of the things that Sosa seems to think are 'great' actually 'awful'?

ALL of the flavor, character and style is now washed out into a bland, cottage-cheese-like substance... why play any one class, if every class can now heal? Why play an old, sage wizard, if NO planning or study goes into the magical arts? why play an original character, if they all just get shoe-horned into 1 of 3 'uses'?  Whats the difference between an Archer and a Wizard who can cast an infinite number of Magic Missiles a day? What about the prestige and challenge involved in playing a Wizard? Instead of role-playing a smart-alacky warrior who forces the attention of his opponents, now, Fighters get a "Taunt"... ostensibly to gain "aggro" from a "MOB"so that they can "tank".

This is the most egregious "dumbing down" that i have ever seen (well.. at least that hits so close to home).  They're letting D&D be remade into something easily palatable to the Idiotcracy.  Unless Wizards of the Coast reveal some SERIOUS customization and personalization for characters, i will CERTAINLY be skipping 4th Edition. Why wants to play a character thats just like every other one out there? Answer: WoW fags.

Re: 4th Edition

They're only doing what they need to do to survive as a viable business model. DnD is losing more and more players every year to video games and MMOs. In order for their franchise to stay appealing to today's modern consumer, then it has to be what people who play RPGs want to play. And that is something simple and easy to pick up. WotC may push a way the last of the old school players, but those are a dying breed anyway. They have to get fresh consumers to the product.

I'm not saying I LIKE these changes, but I certainly understand them. And the great thing about DnD, is that if you prefer 3rd edition, you can keep using it. New adventures are only limited by your imagination, not by what product is currently being produced.

true that... and, i must admit, they have fleshed out and expanded 3rd Ed as far as they could, rules-wise (crunch). Settings, characters, places, flavor text, etc, (fluff) is easily transfered in between rulesets.

But, my main business-model contention is this: By making D&D more WoW-like, they are going to drive off their primary customer base... BUT, i do NOT think that they will pull in any appreciable amount of players from computer-based MMOs... Who's gonna leave WoW for D&D? Why buy books, mini's, find a place and time to play, etc, when PC gaming is so convenient?

Instead of making D&D more attractive to ALL (and NEW) players, they're just turning it into WoW's ugly, slightly more accessible friend.

Re: 4th Edition

this is cool and all.. but its also WHY i hate 4th Edition:

http://jessewarden.com/2009/09/air-app- … aster.html

It was created in response to my new players, who are tech saavy, having a slow time getting a game going. I copied the design metaphor used in MMORPG games, as well as creating an online database via Django of user submitted content to help the process go faster, as well as supporting house rules

I’ve spent my spare time the last 6 months building an AIR application called “Powerz“. Simply, it is an application that allows you to play Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition a lot quicker. It was built in response to newer players hastily flipping back and forth through rule book pages, all the while lamenting how much easier it is to do this in World of Warcraft.

....then fucking play world of warcraft you fucking pussies...jesus...it's so hard to flip pages and read....Blizzard can do that for me.

hey stupid fuckers...the one of the great things about table top is the socializing you do with the few friends who can stand your fucking presence..these motherfuckers sitting around the goddamn table are the reason you are flipping through your goddamn books....also, L2memorize....it's something you learned when you were a kid...if you've been playing a class for a few games, by god, did you fucking learn anything? if you get fed up flipping through some fucking thin ass trees, chances are you're a fucking retard. if you enjoy reading your fucking players handbook, chances are you appreciate the game you're fucking playing with the friends you're playing with, fuckingshitdamnitguys, stop being retarded.

Re: 4th Edition

i love the fact that you type EXACTLY as you speak. i can hear your voice as i read your text as clear as a bell. lol...

but, yeah... if you want to play an RPG, but are somehow too goddamn lazy/stupid/spoiled to pick up a BOOK, you've got bigger problems than trying to figure our how to spend your leisure time.

i fear that tabletop gaming may go the way of the 8-track tape. sad
