wow... "insightful" and "Lady Ga Ga" are two things i'd never thought i use in a sentence.. bute, here goes: That was a very insightful article about Lady Ga Ga.
and, having seen her pre-glam, i think i like her a lot more. I was unsure of her self-awareness about the performance of her pop identity, but Mark cleared that up for me.
I think she's interesting, and i wish her success, but that doesnt mean i actually enjoy her music.. lol.

She's very much a female drag queen. She also kind of reminds me of Marilyn Manson in that she very conscientiously constructs a persona of an exaggeration of a particular kind of music star.
I kind of dig the freak show aspect of her persona, but the music leaves me bored.

Reading the bio from her website, listening to interviews and just watching and adoring her, I think the article was a bit off...one thing, she doesn't really owe Beyonce anything...just the dude wants to throw the slanted e in there somewhere..... *rolls eyes* Anyhoo....Lady Gaga is a performer, she even admits she's a ham about it all. She loves the spotlight, she loves her fans and she's got a lot of love to share....
She's an artist...the outfits she wears, the way she has her performances choreographed, it seems like something that could be seen in a modern art exhibit. She's a true exhibitionist and she's bringing it to the masses. It's not any of the "tee hee" cookie cutter popness of Britney and Christina and it has the edge of Madonna with huge influences by Warhol. She's even admitted to ripping her name off a Queen song "Radio Gaga". She throws up a lot of influences from when music wasn't mass produced like in the late 90s with the horror show that was boy bands and pop princesses. Gaga adds burlesque and rock, pop and disco, underground and mainstream in one kaleidoscope of a persona that is Lady Gaga.
If you're waiting for something, you're not paying attention.
It isn't just the songs and it isn't just the show. She's the same on the stage as she is off it. You can't say the same for many singers these days, with the whole year that was Britney's personal hell being splattered on the tabloid pages, Madonna running off with African babies and South American models. They look like hacks compared to Lady Gaga in a sense that they are only artists when the light is on stage. The kookiness, the drama, the art is still there when Lady Gaga steps off the stage. And she loves her fans and she does all of it for her fans. She understands she wouldn't be anywhere without them and she does not go anywhere giving a show for her fans to see. She remembers when she bombed at all the clubs before she ruled them and it's doubtful she'd ever forget. The only other person I could think of who could match that same devotion to her fans would be Taylor Swift from what I've heard and read. If you watch you'll see the art show that is Gaga you'll see magnificent influences of a wide range of nearly opposing ideas being balled into one exhibit.
And in the course of time since man first sang a musical note, what else could be made? What else can be done that could be deemed "original"? If anything, her originality lies in her ability to mesh so many different influences into one glittering disco ball for people to see. Where as that been done so successfully?
I am totally in love with Gaga, her work, her performances, her attire, everything about her inspires me to be myself. She isn't do it just to show something new, she's trying to tell everybody to show the world something. She wants to share the spotlight with her fans and the best way to do that is to do that which makes you happy, even if it makes you stand out or fit in. What she has to offer is inspiration. Go ahead and wear the funky hat, go ahead and say what's on your mind. I see some of her performances and I remember a time when I used to be creative and stood out from people around me when I was young. When I see her sing and dance, I see someone who truly loves to do what she does....it isn't polished to sell money, it's her performing to a crowd she adores and adores her right back.
I remember putting on songs and dancing and lip synching and making up my own moves and drawing my own outfits. I remember when I would write stories and dream during the daytime. I haven't relived these kinds of memories for a long time...almost a decade. That's the power she has, she has the power to move. Which is a lot more than what can be said about her contemporaries who mass produce songs and tours and on off seasons go try to be personal, and try to hide from their fans. I've never been so interested in a person as a celebrity but for the first time I'm actually obsessed with someone, not because I think her songs are great (i think they're awesome, I listen to them daily plus the remixes) but because I love to see her move, hear her talk. To see how brave she is doing what she wants to do, wear what she wants to wear knowing people will say something in the papers the next day and she doesn't mind and I find myself gathering the courage to dream again.

The more I see of her the more I'm liking GaGa:

I do wonder if Collin's comment about her being" a female drag queen" doesn't have something to do with my facination.

i bet its heroin... or meth.
She was recently reported to be suffering from exhaustion. And yeah that can mean anything. You can really see it in her face. Does she look like MM in that pic or what?!

Quite possible, but also possible that she was intending to look fucked up as a part of the outfit.

I bit, I read on her site that she passed out due to exhaustion before a show...I think she tries to hard to impress her fans...or does drugs...she has lost quite a bit of weight.... *sighs* I still love her though...

Has everyone watched the video for Telephone yet? No? Head over to http://www.ladygaga.com and watch it before I get into spoilers while I discuss my thoughts on it. (Caution: the video is super racy and steamy. May not be SFW)
First off, wow. That is an awesome video. The costuming is just as bizarre as I was hoping for, it had a lot of humor, and it had a good share of WTF moments. It's another perfect Lady Gaga video.
Getting into specifics now, theres a whole lot going on the video that's worth talking about. It's great that she decided for the video to not match up with the meaning of the song, yet still tie it in just enough so that it's not completely out of left field. It starts out as homaging the classic Women in Prison movie Caged Heat and ends up dipping its toes into Thelma and Louise, all with a heavy Quentin Tarrantino vibe. And how great of it was Quentin to let Gaga use the Pussy Wagon from Kill Bill in the video? XD
The costuming is fantastic. I love the Prison Stripe outfit at beginning and all the shit she has stuck in her hair. My absolute favorites in the video though are the Police Tape bikini/bandages and the Smoking Cigarette glasses. I literally LOL'ed at those. XD
Theres also a lot of great flat out weirdness in the video. What is up with all the blatant product placement? At first it was irritating, but now I'm pretty sure that it's intentionally being visually intrusive. I wonder what message she's trying to send by doing that. The whole Let's Make a Sandwich scene is great; I love how her back up queens are dancing around holding cabbages up to their ears like phones. The Sandwich scene is almost a non-sequitur, but it ties in to the big finish of Beyonce and Gaga killing Tyrese (and an entire diner full of innocent people) by poisoning their food. The big, american flag bikini, choreographed dance number in the diner intercut with flashes of the people she just murdered is both hilarious and creepy as all shit.
I could keep going on and on about the video and all the awesome things in it. It's great when a music video gives you so much to digest that you can't cover it all in one post.
Also, I did finally break down and buy both of Lady Gaga's albums. Her first one, The Fame is just kind of okay. There's a few catchy songs that I didnt already know from the videos, but theres a lot of pop-fluff that makes me roll my eyes and reach for the Next Track button.
The Fame Monster, however, is fucking awesome. Every song on it is about a fear of some kind. It's a much darker album that has a strong, impactful sound to it, borrowing a lot from 80s and early 90s pop/dance. I've caught music/style/lyrical references to Madonna, Ace of Base, Duran Duran, and Depeche Mode. There's not a bad track on that disc and it's well worth buying at $10 or less.

i have to admit... she's intriguing. She's fucking good at what she does and she really seems to pour a lot of heart, soul and imagination into her craft.
I think she's the strongest, most innovative voice in pop music right now.
also..
Spoiler (highlight to view):
"told you she didn't have a dick"

yeah, david and I were discussing the video last night. He hasn't seen it but as I was describing it he was remarking how Gaga made the music video NOT match the song. He was quoting Lewis Black about how if you can see the music video and it syncs up with the song, just shoot yourself. Something about how music goes in your ears and visuals through you eyes and something something rather. I'll make him watch it soon enough.
but yeah, I loved every part of it and the whole "See, I told you she didn't have a dick" was just hilarious. i loved her outfits, from the diet coke cans in the hair and the police tape to the abstract telephone hair do and hats. The concept was awesome, it was so abstract and off topic from the song yet it seemed to go along with it anyways. I just love Gaga and I hate that I missed an opportunity see her in concert...
