I watched this on blu last night. I have mixed feelings. Quick summary of the movie in case you don't know, Bank Loan officer pisses off an old Gypsy woman, gets cursed, and fucked up shit happens.
The good:
It features some fan-fucking-tastic horror, and I don't mean torture porn or gore. Whats cool is that the movie manages to be pretty damn scary using shadows, sound, wind, and tension. The effects are for the most part great, the acting is good (by horror standards
and Raimi's directing has done a fantastic job of putting the shitastic Spider-man 3 behind him.
The bad:
Occasionally Raimi slips into Evil Dead mode, which is okay since that's his thing, but the Raimi-style humor/horror doesnt seem to fit in with the rest of the movie's mood. The movie takes itself seriously, so when a possessed person does a little Evil Dead style jig in mid air it knocks you right out of the movie. Also, the last act of the movie is guilty of being (SEMI-SPOILER) too transparent. The movie telegraphs the ending in such a way that it is neither suspenseful or surprising.
The ugly:
This movie is awesomely gross. There's very little blood and no gore, but get ready for an onslaught of unclean people and fluids invading peoples personal space.
Overall:
7.5/10 Worthwhile. The high points are really high, but the low points are weighty enough to drag the movie away from true greatness.
