LFO

Don't know if you've followed this story, it's gotten way bigger than I ever thought it would. It's now being covered in the New York Times.

Story in a nutshell: Cheerleaders at Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe high school down here made some religious-based banners for the players to run through onto the field. The school made them stop, since football games are a school sponsored event. The cheerleaders (and their supporters) staged protests, which got media attention and now the banners are going to be on display by the fans.

This is not the kind of national attention I would like for my area to receive.

There's a facebook group with comments that will make your brain bleed. This is my favorite one here.

Re: LFO

Hmmm, yeah, keep it in the stands and not on school sponsored materials and in school sponsored events.  that's nice, they know their places now.

Re: LFO

Ive kind of been keeping up with this story and have been wondering if you had any thoughts about it, Russ...

Its definitely brain-bleed inducing that the school seems so oblivious to its obvious breach of the Constitution, as a public school. At least the Principal, as through gritted teeth as it was, acknowledged the breach and seems to have corrected it.

Re: LFO

I've been ambivalent about religion in general and Christianity specifically but over the last couple of years I've grown more and more cynical about it, and it's directly a result of stuff like this. It's a fucking football game, where does religion fit into it at all?

I guess it's good the school is now sticking with the ban on religious banners on the field, but I'm sure they just want to avoid a lawsuit. And all the banner supporters are holding up "free speech" for their argument, and like the commenter above I wondered then if they would be ok with some Jewish banners, Satanic banners, or even FSM banners out on the field. Well evidently not, since "freedom of speech doesn't apply to heathens".

...which is why i say "if you're not mad, you're not paying attention". This kind of crap is pervasive throughout American, and specifically, Southern, culture. Its Ignorance coupled with arrogance and more than a little bigotry.

They may be doing it to avoid a lawsuit, but the result is the same... unfortunately, society has to force people to do the right thing sometimes, especially the people in power who are to be held to certain standards.
