We probably won't see this for a LONG time, but I loved the first one and this description of what they have started to improve is amazing. I can't wait!

I rented it today as a reward to myself for surviving the black death. Turns out its more of a punishment than a reward. The gameplay is muddled and unclear, the aiming feel sloppy, and the setting is unpleasant. It makes me want to go take it back to blockbuster and rent FarCry 1 instead. >

Elaboration? Is it an entirely different experience on the PC? Is the game some how more balanced? Does it make more sense? I can see that it might control better if one prefers mouse and keyboard for aiming, but I have always been more adept at dual-stick for FPS games. Unfortunately, the DS FPS scheme requires a bit of finesse to pull off right and usually only about half the entries int the genre get it right. FC2 falls into the bad half. I wonder if I can get a refund if I return it to the store less than6 hours after I rented it...

Sorry to hear that. I knew there was a reason why we didn't hear much about this game after it was released. I guess everyone played it and thought it was a dud. Oh well.

Quite the opposite actually, I've heard all kinds of good things about the game, and it made several editors best of '08 lists. I'm disappointed that I was disappointed in it.

I must just be living in a Far Cry 2 'less void. Oh well.

I read where you say the aiming feels sloppy. I was commenting on that mostly, because there ARE differences in the gameplay between mouse+keyboard and an analog stick that allows you to aim only so fast.
I finished FarCry 1 not too long ago. I didn't find it all that amazing, as far as a game goes. It seems like the developers were just building a game engine and to show it off they HAD to make a game for it. They weren't the best game developers, but the engine is quite neat.
So, meh. If they actually concentrated more on the gameplay, story, and other such elements than the engine itself, i can not play FarCry 2 and be happy.

I think part of what I loved about FarCry 1 was how it was adapted for the Xbox. From what I understand FC1 for the PC is just a standard goons and guns game, but on the Xbox they added in gene-altering where you get some really fun beast powers like cat vision, super sprinting, and feral strikes. It was awesome and really added a lot of character to the gameplay. I understand that a lot of people who love the PC version hate those changes, but hey, its all a matter of personal preference.
Plus, the Dualstick control felt right and natural in my hands. I looked at what I wanted to lok at at killed what I needed to kill.
I didnt know that Crytek wasnt actually involved in FC2, that explains a lot about why the game doesnt even remotely feel like the original. The game isnt complete garbage, as there are a number of success in it, but they're all hampered by gamebreaking flaws.
The game does have a great fire propagation system. Fields burn trailing into houses and usually ending in big bada-boom.
One of my major complaints, the choose-your-own-path storyline, is ambitious, but the game doesn't prepare you for it well. The factions are ill-defined and all of your choices feel blind. Choosing your alliances feels meaningless if you dont have any idea of why you're joining one side over the other and no concept of how its going to affect the game down the line.
The biggest fault of the game however is the setting. The open world is HUGE and densely detailed. It really looks like African wilderness. The shanty towns all have great architecture and look lived in. However, this impressive world is ruined by LONG travel times, meaningless random encounters (another roadblock? really?), and a broken save system. You are only allowed to save the game at safe houses. Safe houses are usually a 5 minute drive from you mission location. So when you die (which can happen quickly and without much warning) your last save gets loaded in, which means you have to spend another 5 minutes trekking back to the mission location, only to die again and repeat.
Lastly, and this is just personal preference, but theres something about African civil war that I find intensely un-fun. No heroes, no villains. It's a horrible place filled with horrible people doing horrible things. Despite the constant gun battles and explosions, I don't find much drama in the situation because it all seems endless and pointless.

there's a reason for that:
Director: Uwe Boll

I don't know directors by name, but I'll see if I can torrent the movie to check it out

You should know Uwe Boll's name. It's a curse responsible for the Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, Dungeon Siege, and Postal movies.
I want to see Far Cry, but Blockbuster isnt carrying it and I aint paying $20 to buy a DVD.

LOL, yeah, I am not surprised by that. Although some reviews said it wasn't "all" bad.
