I don't see why we'd hate ourselves over that.

This trailer is fucking hilarious.
On a serious note. Yes Hollywood is formulaic and unoriginal, nowadays. It probably won't change because the time limit most movies work with is that 1 and half to 2 hour block. 3 hours is about the most you can go before you audience gets up and leave. Its like reading a book. Most of the stories we know we learned in school or read from the best sellers list and those are usually go on screen. So its all material we've already heard of, just in live action form. Expecting anything new from Hollywood, a business and culture that defines itself by the millions of dollars its movies takes in, is just sheer silliness. The formulas make the money and that's really what it comes down.
If you want Art, the best bet is to look for art house films, independent films that don't try to make the money but rather make the art. The Academy Awards are chosen by the Academy of Motion Picture arts and Science (AMPAS) and its membership is through invitation by the Board of Governors. It was started by Louis B Mayer of MGM so of course its going to have strong influences by Hollywood being a Hollywood creation. Its basically a bit jerk off session for Hollywood itself. They're all patting themselves on the back and saying "Wow we're so awesome". Sometimes this setting can force some people in the industry to try to break the mold and do something inventive, creative, breathtaking. I'm sure you could name a handful of movies you thought were super awesome but were not "academy" worthy, didn't pick up the Oscars like they should have or booed at the box office. And they were probably movies produced by some well known companies.
The price to make a movie can be ginormous and companies are not willing to put up the capital to make something that may not sell to an audience that makes up less than 10% of the possible number of movie-goers. So companies will go with what's easy and what sells. Because really, most of the population of movie goers, really don't want to see something different. people as a whole fear change. Individuals seek it. But that's what movie companies play to, the people as a whole....
Okay i'm done talking, that bit was fucking stupid funny....and I want popcorn.

^What she said about if you want art.
As for the Oscars, they are more political than anything, this years more so than ever.
Was the Hurt Locker an entertaining and interesting ride, sure.
Did it deserve Best Picture?
NO WAY IN FUCKING HELL
Part of it was the Academy jabbing Cameron for his 'behavoir' when he won the award for Titanic (He quoted a line from the movie, zomg), and part of it was the Academy saying "We can give Best Picture to a Vagina".
Kathryn Bigelow is talented yes, but honestly, they played "I am Woman" for her walk up music which just says "Sure you struggled, toiled, and sweated for your passion, but this is just because you have a vagina."

note that we had to leave America (and Hollywood) to see such art!
Too bad the American version of Coupling sucked so much. the original was better than Friends, in my opinion.
