Re: iPhone

Well, the worst that could happen is Apple would release an iPhone software update that would write over the existing software on the phone, which would possibly undo the jailbreak and disable custom apps you had installed. There's very little chance your phone would be bricked - if anything unexpected happens, you can just use iTunes to restore your iPhone to factory settings.

And if you prefer to leave it stock, that's fine too.

Re: iPhone

Hrm, so its not like PSP Homebrew then. Sony got tired of the PSP custom firmwares so they altered their updates to detect if the system has been modded. Once you go custom with PSP, there's no going back.

Of course, it's a Sony product, so annoyances goes without saying. big_smile

Re: iPhone

Well keep in mind that the whole reason jailbreaking is possible right now is thanks to a bug in Safari's handling of malformed images that causes the app to crash and execute bits of arbitrary code. This is known as a buffer overflow and it's what AppTapp exploits in order to install software on the iPhone.

It's entirely reasonable that a future iPhone software update would fix this vulnerability which would basically put a roadblock in hacking the device. It certainly won't stop it for good though.

Another thing to consider is Apple's already announced an iPhone SDK (Software Development Kit), which would be available to developers and provide them with everything they need to create true iPhone apps and not just some AJAX web app. It's supposed to come out in February and I'm sure we'll find out more during MacWorld next month. Hopefully it will legitimize iPhone app development and there wouldn't be a need to jailbreak it.

I have a feeling iPhone apps developed with the SDK will be signed, so you can be reasonably assured of their authenticity when you install them, and they will most likely run in a chrooted jail so they won't be able to touch any of the system processes.

Re: iPhone

In case you missed the news, jailbreaking and unlocking your phone is not illegal. It doesn't mean Apple won't continue to introduce new technical measures to make it harder to do, but they can't sue you under the DMCA over it. Which is good.

I played around with iOS 4 on my iPhone 3G, and it's, well, just slow as fuck. Even turning off multitasking and Spotlight indexing doesn't help, the phone just doesn't have teh snappy anymore. So I downgraded to 3.1.2, which was a challenge in itself. I rewarded myself with a new wallpaper.
