Well, I don't think that humans have more of a right to live than other animals.  And being cruel and causing pain is unconscionable. (yes, I had to look up how to spell that..)  But I have to be honest, if I were looking down at my gravely ill child, sister, spouse, etc and the results of animal research could save them pain and suffering...I couldn't say, "please save that lab mouse and let my family member die".  Relieving the pain and suffering from sickness and disease is why the medical community exists.  (okay.. insert modern joke here about how doctors just want to make a load of cash)  And the results of medical research are applied to sick and diseased animals in veterinary medicine as well.
