So we have a land line at home, but only 'cause it's free. Mostly it's just used to monitor the alarm system, and I've never given the telephone number out to anyone because we never answer it. It rings occasionally but it's always a telemarketer (not so much now that I added telemarketer call screening) or a wrong number. I ignore it 99% of the time.
Today though it just kept ringing, and on a whim I picked it up and answered. A guy with a thick Indian accent told me he was calling from "The Windows Company" to let me know my computer was sending out spam and he was going to help me fix it. He then asked me if I was in front of my computer and I said yes. I was basically playing along cause I knew this wasn't legit and I wanted to see what he would try and do.
He kept telling me to go to the start button in the left corner of the screen, and since I was playing dumb I told him I didn't see that. Then he told me to check my keyboard next to the control key for a Windows key and I told him I didn't see that either. Finally he tried to get me to go to LogMeIn and I asked why, he said so one of their technicians could connect to my computer. I told them I had a Mac and he asked if I had any Windows computer. I told him no, but I've got one running Linux and at this point he mumbled something about having a wrong number and hung up. Which is too bad, I was hoping to keep him on the line for a while longer.
Have you ever heard about this? I mean I assume they were basically going to install some spyware on my computer and turn it into a zombie PC for a botnet or something. But that's a really odd way to try and infect someone like that. What ever happened to good old viruses?

That is fucking nuts. I could see some folks falling for this though. So sad.
