I think I'm gonna skip the 4S. I did pay full price for my Verizon 4 when it came out in February and so right now, they claim I am elegible for a new one at upgrade pricing if I sign a new contract of course.
In December though I'll have my last New Every Two discount, which should grant me another $100 off. I think I'll wait on that, of course I have a feeling that Verizon will tell me it's not applicable to Apple products.
Either way if I do nothing, my contract with Verizon is up in March next year. I may wait it out and then see if I want to switch to AT&T or Sprint, Verizon is a little steep.

Yeah, me and the Mrs. are debating this stuff right now. I've read that if you already have an iPhone, then you can skip the 4s and just wait for 5. We are pretty well overdue for new phones, so we are thinking an iPhone 4s for the Mrs. and probably the new Droid being debuted next Wed for me. I figured that would give us a chance to see the best of what is out there right now, then if we like the iPhone or Droid better, we can pursue those products later on down the line (e.g., she can see if she likes iPhone better, but if she doesn't like it, she can check out my droid, and vice versa). Is this a good idea?
I started out as a strong believer in Droid, but it seems that in all the time that it has been publicly available, they haven't really made any leaps and bounds compared to what all Apple has been doing. I've kept my eye on all the Droid hardware and there is pretty much an issue with every single one that is out. The Bionic and Galaxy S II that are relatively new both have issues with their screens, or not having the most recent version of android, or being too heavy, too thick, whatever. You'd think with them competing with the iPhone, it wouldn't have taken this long to get a nice, sleak phone out to rival the iPhone. But nothing has come out in all this time. It has always been a better idea to just grab an iPhone. So annoying.
I really wanted a slimmer and lighter iPhone 5, but since all we got was another iPhone 4 (granted, it is faster, better camera, and has AI; I guess my expectations were just built up too much for a body redesign, not just updated chips and lenses), I am tempted to try out the Nexus Prime (or whatever they are going to rename it). It will probably be announced next Wed, but the rumored specs seem better than everything else out there right now.
Thoughts?

I dropped my iPhone 4 and busted it all to hell. It's holding up so far, but I don't think it will make it til iPhone 5 appears on the scene. Cracks are getting bigger...so iPhone 4s it is. It's supposed to ship today, but I don't see it coming out of my account yet.

I just placed my order through the Apple site.
i noticed this morning that my account had been refunded and my addresses were all accurate, SO i tried to order the phone through the AT&T Wireless website. failure. utter, failure. the website simply, literally, just didnt work. it wouldn't update, process or acknowledge my changes or button clicks. pathetic.
So i went to the Apple site and got it done, effortlessly, in less than 10 minutes. I'll be getting my 4S in a week or two.

It's funny how right after the keynote everyone was bitching about how the 4S wasn't enough of an upgrade and everyone wanted a true 5th gen iPhone, but then they have a record number of preorders and AT&T's system (again) can barely keep up with all the activations on launch day. This is exactly how the 3GS played out when it was released.

i dont get the people being upset by it not being a new version... sheesh, the 4 has only been out for less than a year-and-half. Its not even like a SMALL upgrade. its fucking twice as fast and has MAJOR new features.
i'm totally stoked for it. my little 3G cant even use iOS 5.

But it's gotta LOOK different. Otherwise how else will people know I got the new phone when it looks just like my old one?
I think people were upset because instead of coming out in June, which is traditionally when they come out, it was delayed until September and then turned out to be not a new design.
And the other reason is a lot of people were expecting 4G. However there was never any indication it would be 4G, plus Apple has said in the quarterly earnings call that adding a 4G chipset would force them to compromise on battery life and stability, something they definitely won't do. I mean the first iPhone didn't even support 3G and it was pretty well established by then.
I'm with you though, I personally think the iPhone 4 design still looks better than anything out there. And they completely reworked the inside. Dual core processor, diversity antenna, better camera. And somehow with all that the've given it even better battery life. To shoehorn all that into the same design is a major engineering feat to say the least.

And the improved camera.
I figured I might as well stick with Verizon so I can keep my unlimited data. Plus I get an 8% discount on my bill anyways. Not to mention I get reimbursed for most of it as well. With that in mind, there is almost no advantage to not signing a new contract and take the upgrade, my monthly bill is the same either way. My New Every 2 discount got me $30 off, so the phone was $169. Now combine that with the fact that I can sell my old phone for ~$350 and it's a no brainer.
Plus I figure if they release an iPhone 5 next year and I want it bad enough, I'll just pay full price and sell my 4S to offset that a bit.
